I received a camera as a gift, it has 4 megapixels, my friend says that you need higher resolution if you want to print a bigger photo. For small prints, it's enough. I'm not an expert, though.

My camera is 10mp but I honestly don't think it is neccessary to go over 6 if you are an amateur like most of us. But most of them are over 8mp now.
The latest point-and-shoot from Canon and the like are 10-12mp, but if you want more there is apparently a 36mp for sale at about $30,000US!!
Happy snapping!

This is very true Jenny, there many, many cameras with characteristics that are not necessary needed when you are just an amateur photographer. I also have 6 mp and I'm very happy with it.

6 megapixels are enough. In fact, the higher the megapixel count, the closer the pixels must be on the sensor (for sensors of equal size). That means the pixels are smaller and receive less light. This requires more amplification of the signals and causes more image noise. Besides, there is no point in having a higher resolution if the lens is not good enough to resolve the extra detail (often the case, even for pro lenses).

If the above sounds too technical, just remember this: Don't go for many megapixels, but instead go for a camera with a large image sensor and a good lens.

Hi Ferry,
In general, you can't really go wrong with Canon or Nikon, but there may be cheaper cameras that offer equal value. A great website to compare models and features is http://www.dpreview.com.

I have an small Olympus, which has been great. I also found a "hybrid" Panasonic that has a great zoom and seems to have a good lens (a full DSLR was too expensive for me too). It was a bit more expensive than a compact, but not as pricey as a good DSLR, and has heaps of features. Most makers now produce some sort of hybrid camera so you should be able to find info on them from most web sites or camera stores. Good luck!
