We stay at home, maybe a few days there or there. It's kind of nice to stay and don't feel pressure of daily routine. But if you are looking for last minute deals, internet offers a lot of them. You can try: http://www.lastminuteaanbiedingen.nl/

Great question! There was a lot of speculation that people around the world would stay closer to home this year. From talking to the locals where I live in Spain they tell me the number of tourists is better than they'd expected, but people are spending less - eating in, rather than going to restaurants, taking less excursions, etc.
Still, I think it can be a positive experience - people can get to spend more time exploring the beauty and wonders of their home surroundings, rather than constantly searching far afield. As long as we spend time relaxing with the people we love that has to be the most important.

We stay close to home and visit the German Alpine Road. It covers around 450 kilometres between Lindau on Lake Constance and Berchtesgaden on Lake Königssee close to the border with Austria. It supposed to be beautiful and stunning. The best of it it's not far away (only 6 hours driving) but still plenty of things to see, there are 25 ancient castles, abbeys and fairytale palaces to visit.

We visit my parents for a couple of weeks every year, for kids it's good to see grandparents again, for us it's nice to visit old friends. When you are an expat going back home for holiday is always attractive (and cheap) option:-)
