It's good to know all those hugs and cuddles, and imaginary kisses put inside pockets of of our little ones when they went to primary school are indeed forever.

I also remember reading a study that concluded that children whose fathers were active caregivers, that is that they were part of the regular daily routine of bathing, feeding, dressing, etc, grew up to be more compassionate human beings.

A tendency to 'over-mother' is natural, and it is sometimes difficult for the parent to learn to start letting go, especially with the first one. But as any parent to teenagers will tell you, it doesn't take much for their children to point out how 'embarrassing parents can be at times. ;-D

According to a new report by the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health, the hugs, kisses, and affection you received from your mother as a young child does enable you to successfully cope with the stresses and strains of adulthood. The idea is that the initial development of a healthy motherly bond aids the child in facilitating secure attachments in future relationships. The key, however, is knowing when to pull away. Over-mothering can be intrusive and embarassing, especially as a child ages into a mature individual.
