Human papillomarvirus (HPV) vaccine (also called Gardisil) is a vaccine that prevents infection with certain species of human papillovarius associated with the development of cervical cancer and it is recommended by health officials in Australia, Canada, Europe and the United States for young women aged 11 to 19. (This group is just a catchment but the vaccine can also be given to girls from 9 or 10 years of age to 26.) In April 2008, the Dutch Health Council recommended that the HPV vaccination was added to the country's national immunisation programme.

HPV is administered in a series of three shots over a six month period. To date, over 40 million doses have been administered world wide. In the US, 8 million girls have received the vaccination, and in the UK, 93% of 12 to 23 year old girls have started their course of 3 injections. As of September 2008, HPV is free in Switzerland and is available through schools as well as clinics.

See your doctor for further details and to help you decided if the HPV is right for your daughter.

Hallo
I'm new to this site and a bit unsure how it all works, but this comment caught my eye,and i feel really compelled to reply(i even joined the " being a parent group"although i have no children of my own)
Having read Orie's comment i would like to simplify matters. The hpv virus is basically a variation of the simple wart virus. It is caught by physical contact, and once in the body, stays forever, either active or dormant(similar to the herpes,or coldsore, virus). It only takes once.
Sometimes this virus can cause the onset of cervical cancer.
Here it comes, the bit i really want to push home!!
To ALL parents of young girls.Get your daughter vaccinated!!!!!
Beg,Borrow or,dare i say it,Steal this vaccine if necessary!!!!
You are NOT giving them a licence to unprotected sex or promiscuity!!
You are saving them from the shame, humiliation and pain of treatment, and maybe saving thier lives.

Thank you for your comments Jane and for helping to explain some of the consequences of HPV. Besides cervical cancer, I was too conservative to say that it also causes genital warts, but since you put it so correctly and so bluntly there is certainly no reason to mince words.

HPV is caught by contact, and the reason they administer it to young girls is that they want to make sure that the vaccine is received ideally before they become sexually active (or at least soon thereafter). I know this came as a bit of a shock to a friend of mine who has daughters 12 and 14 years of age when her doctor suggested it. However, after some research she decided to go ahead with the shots. Better safe than sorry.
