Short Story competition

New Deadline: September 30, 2010

Inside Twente invites you to enter its short story competition. It's entirely free, and the aim is to provide members with the opportunity to publish on the website and reach as many readers as possible. How will we do this? The best five stories will be placed on the website where members will be invited to vote for the winning entry.

Here are the rules:
Entries must be 2000 words or less
We leave the theme to your imagination
Entries must be written in English
Entries remain the copyright of the author, however the top 5 winning stories will be posted on the Inside Twente website
No judge may enter the competition

Submitting a story

There are two ways of submitting your story for the Inside Twente Short Story Competition.
1. You can publish it as a blog. Here is how you do this:
Login to your account on Inside Twente, if you are not a member, please join us.
After login, go to your profile page and locate the "Blog Posts" module in the middle column. Click the "Add a Blog Post" link.

You can add text, links, and images to your blog post using the blog editor toolbar. When you are ready to add the story, please don’t forget to add a tag “competition”

Finally, please send a message to the group informing us that you have submitted your entry!
2. you can send it by email to insidetwente@gmail.com

IMPORTANT NOTICE:
if you choose to send an email, the subject of the email should be: "competition".

The new deadline for submitting stories is 30.09.2010. We will announce the top five finalists on 30.10.2010.

* As many members of Inside Twente are non-native English speakers, judging will be done on the story structure, originality and content rather than grammar. Also, every effort will be made to judge fairly and independently. Should a story be submitted by a member who is known to the judge, the story will be read and assessed by another judge. All entries will be read by more than one judge. The best five stories will be published on the Inside Twente website and the winner chosen by a member voting system. The winning entry will be awarded a prize.

Best of luck and happy writing!

Here's my attempt at a one-sentence story:
Every time he comes home wild-eyed and ravenous, she wonders who he murdered that day, and she imagines it all, every rabid minuscule detail, until she falls asleep and dreams of who will be next.

Fancy trying a one-sentence story? I've heard from a reliable source that many literary agents often ask writers to sum up their work in one sentence. If you have a fabulous idea for a novel or a film script, or even just some vague notion you're patiently trying to figure out, try shrinking it down to just one sentence. Need inspiration? Take a look at this website: http://www.onesentence.org/

Hi Mark,
If you want to submit a play, we'd love to read it!

There's nothing in the rules that states that the 'story' must be in prose form... can it be a play, too?

Struggling to find inspiration for the short story competition? Here are some ideas to get you started.....

1/It's spring. You are sitting in the sun with some friends when a stranger comes up to you and hands you a bunch of flowers......
2/You have recently arrived in the Netherlands. So many things are new and different. You are in the garden when the neighbor appears to tell you that your tree is blocking their sunlight and you need to chop it down......
3/Your dream is about to come true when.......
4/You are cycling home from town with your panniers overflowing. A car pulls out in front of you. You break hard and fall. Most of your groceries roll into the street......
5/You are gazing out the window reminiscing when an orange glow appears in the sky. Suddenly the lights go out.....

Some of you may wish to write about your experiences living in the Netherlands and about the cultural differences and how you have overcome them. Some of you may prefer the fictitious route. It's all good....
The ideas are merely suggestions, and only intended to provide a bit of inspiration for those who are struggling. Do what you like with them! They are completely optional!
