Have you ever given much thought as to why people go on holiday? Or why someone chooses a certain place to visit? Seriously. I was recently asked that perplexing question by some new friends and it got me to thinking… What do people look for in a holiday? Wilderness, museums, National Parks, theme parks, galleries, walks, cities, towns, villages. There are so many options, I can understand that the choice can be overwhelming. From time to time I think it would be better to stay at home.

The trick to a holiday at home is to make sure all the mundane regular things are done before the holiday starts. That way you are less likely to be distracted. And I know that it’s hard but surely you can manage to turn off your mobile phone and ignore the mail for a week. My sister regularly takes holidays at home. It helps that she is not really an adventurous soul. On her holidays she enjoys taking her dogs on long walks, doing some gardening and watching DVDs.

There are other things you can do on your holidays without travelling on a plane, train or bus. Try seeing your own town as a tourist would. Visit the local museum – you never know what interesting things you might discover. Relax in the lounge of the nicest hotel in the city, for only the cost of a cappuccino. Try to pick the tourists, even speak to one. I’m sure they would appreciate a local perspective. You might even think of revealing the secrets of the best local walking track, café or bargains. Take the time to stroll through the streets and notice things that you have up to now passed by without a second thought.

I will admit that a holiday at home is not for me. I find it too hard to forget about work, emails, cleaning, cooking, ironing… (the list goes on!)

Do you take your holidays at home or away? What makes a good holiday at home?

Jenny, my previous comment was for you. I like the idea of "holidays at home” but you see I can’t even stay away from computer for more than one hour.

a good holiday at home: no cell phone, no emails, no TV. Just you and your partner.

I'm not sure Kate. I have not been to many in Twente. I have stayed at the Star Hotel in Hengelo which was good but nothing incredibly special. I like the front lounge at the Theatre Hotel in Almelo... very comfortable and lots of light (plus a coffee bar!). I would like to have the time to visit some more but life gets in the way!
