Many people take their existence and our planet for granted as they think it will be there forever. The amount of waste and pollution that humans produce grows at a significant speed. It seems that human consumption and their thirst for new things has no limits. Imagine a massive asteroid destroying the majority of living species on earth or humans getting too far thus making our planet uninhabitable. What will happen next? What if humans disappear from this planet? What damage will we leave behind?
People always believed in armageddon or apocalypse. The Hollywood generated various scenarios of human disappearance from our planet. Right now the deliberate action of humanity can potentially destroy the world around us.
Into the darkness?
What will the world look like if we disappear? Most likely it will be a very dark place, as there will be no electricity to light up all the abandoned cities around the world. Most of the power stations around the world work on fossil fuel. If there is no one to produce the fuel and bring it to the power stations, there will be no electricity. You might think that nuclear reactors would melt down without any supervision. To the contrary they will go into a safe mode shortly.
What about alternative sources of energy? For example, wind energy turbines require constant supervision, thus without the maintenance there will be no energy produced. The planet would slowly sink into darkness.
However, there are certain exceptions to this potentially dark scenario. Hoover Dam power plant of the Colorado River in the US can potentially work long in the absence of humans. Its limitless source of energy can keep the power plant running, as long as there is enough water. The system may functions automatically for several years without any human supervision.
Failure of other systems
Big cities not only use underground systems for transportation, but also for drainage and cable purposes. Water pumps will no longer stop ground water from entering the major subways around the world. Underground tunnels would be flooded with water in two days.
Stray dogs will be scavenging around the empty cities. Most of the domestic pets are dependent on people. They will have little chances of survival in a brutal environment without us. Plants will flourish everywhere thus causing major damage to the buildings. There will be no one to prevent the nature from conquering our abandoned cities.
Even if the majority of humans would potentially disappear, some of the people might survive. In this case they would need to adapt to the changed environment and learn how to live in harmony with nature. People would have to use only environmental friendly materials and products, as all the mass production would stop. The soil will be less contaminated thus causing less vapor intrusion. The life would be chemical free and less hazardous. Some people already follow the green lifestyle. They consume less energy, eat healthy and make eco-friendly choices. It is important to stay close to the nature around us and produce less waste. Specialists from Environmental Data Resources will help you in making greener choices in life and at work. You can always evaluate your environmental risks and find the right solution.
